Snow and ice pelted my face as I trekked across the frigid landscape. It was already cold enough without the wind, but a fierce winter storm was blowing in making conditions even colder. The wind and snow were so strong it was difficult to see at times, but I continued on anyway. I didn’t have much hope of seeing much in these conditions, but that’s just the thing with wildlife, you’ll usually see something when you least expect it.
Pausing to rub my hands together and brush the ice off my face, I slowly scanned the surrounding terrain. Nothing.
Camera attached to my backpack, I picked up my ski poles and continued on into the storm. What was that? Was that movement ahead or just the blustering snow playing a cruel trick on my eyes? Briefly pausing, I carefully scanned the landscape. There it was again! I could barely see something moving through the thick snow and ice and it was headed this way!
Hunkering down in the snow I quickly built the snow up in front of me to help obscure my outline. Slowly but steadily it came, a determined Coyote in search of a meal on this bitter winter day. So, I wasn’t the only one out here in this storm after all. Smiling to myself, I settled down deeper into the snow. Don’t worry Mr. Coyote, you’ll find your meal. Determination always pays off!
