Camera and tripod slung over my shoulder, I followed the winding trail that peaceful morning, soaking in the fresh air and beautiful scenery around me. I set out that morning with no particular goal in mind, just hoping to photograph whatever I could find. So far I’d been lucky enough to photograph a pair of Coyotes and a group of charismatic River Otters.

I continued to make my way along the path when, off in the distance, I noticed movement in a flower-filled field. A beautiful Black-tailed Deer! Memories flooded into my head, my 9 year old self exploring my grandmother’s property. Days spent roaming those rolling hills, stalking these Deer with my red binoculars and my first little film camera.

Setting my tripod and camera down, I focused on the Deer surrounded by flowers and pressed the shutter. Smiling, a brief thought crossed my mind, “this one’s for you Mummu!”

I’m so blessed to be able to do what I do. Much of my love for nature stems from those days spent on my Mummu’s (Finnish for grandma) property. My first wildlife photos as a child were taken there and my love for exploring nature, observing and learning about wildlife began there. My Mummu also loved wildlife and always enjoyed hearing about my daily adventures on her California property that she called “The Wild West.” Much of my love for story-telling and sharing my wildlife adventures also began because of my wonderful Mummu. I owe a lot to her as she was a powerful influence in my life and there are few people I’ve ever learned so much from and been closer to.
