It was only mid Autumn, but already the temperature had dropped below zero. That’s one misconception about the desert, they’re not just these scorched landscapes blasted by endless heat, when they get cold oh boy do they get cold! A slight breeze had picked up which added to the chill. Sunset was approaching as I hiked through the high-desert landscape looking for Mule Deer to photograph. I didn’t mind the hiking, it helped me stay warm and kept me from shivering too badly.
Making my way through some rabbitbrush, I spotted some movement on a nearby hill. Pulling up my binoculars I quickly spotted the Deer I had been looking for. Two fine bucks and a few does! Stowing the binoculars, I replaced them with my camera and found a good spot to settle down. Waiting for the Deer to approach, I enjoyed the fresh scent of sagebrush and the beautiful evening colors as they began to blanket the landscape.
It didn’t take too long and soon I had the viewfinder up to my eye, photographing the impressive bucks. Lowering the camera to enjoy the moment, I looked behind me at the stunning desert colors. OH MY GOODNESS! The colors were amazing, and a doe was quickly approaching the skyline. Most photographers tend to focus on the biggest buck they can find and will stick with him no matter what. Me, I completely forgot the bucks in front of me and focused instead on the doe. Click…. Click…. Once again, I lowered the camera and soaked in the moment. A chilled breeze, the faint scent of rabbitbrush and sagebrush on the wind and a beautiful doe with the stunning desert colors enhanced by the setting sun behind. This is what it’s about!
