Alaska. A land of magic, wonder, enchantment. A place I dream of. Not just dreams to come, but dreams reliving the past. A land filled with Bears, Ptarmigan, Wolves and so much more. I owe a lot to this land, I’ve given a lot to this land. I’ll give a lot more and I’ll happily accept whatever it gives me…
Awakening in my comfy tent, I could feel a heaviness in the air. Not the heaviness often mentioned by storytellers to describe bad things to come, but a literal heaviness. Heaviness, or maybe thickness. Fog, yes, it was fog! Stepping out of my tent, I found myself surrounded by a thick layer of morning fog. I hurriedly donned my sandals and grabbed my camera. The sun would be up soon and I knew what that meant. I needed to find a bear, what an opportunity I had this morning. I needed to find a bear.
Setting out from camp, it didn’t take long for me to find the wildlife I was seeking, a bear in the distance! The sun was already beginning to rise and the foggy scene all around me began to change, to bloom like a late-summer flower. What was a thick gray layer just moments before, was now transforming into a vibrant tapestry, filled with shades of orange, with the shadowed mountains still present behind. And there amidst the blooming color, the silhouette of a bear.
I soaked in the moment, for moments like these are gifts from nature and I’d been hoping for this particular gift for a long time!
Every year I have special experiences like these in Alaska. Each year is unique and different, but so very special. Join me in the field photographing bears and other wildlife in this beautiful place. Use code “FIREFOG” at checkout for a special Bear workshop discount.
