I’d experienced countless mornings like this before. Wake up early, well before the sun had risen and trek out across the barren desert, camera in hand, breathing in dust while enjoying the crisp morning air. Yes, I’d experienced all of this many many times before, but this morning was different.
The previous evening I’d discovered something, something I’d been hoping for as I set out into this large desert expanse; a new Kit Fox den! Each year I spend weeks in search of these charismatic little foxes. I like to see how many dens I can find, and of course, I like to photograph them whenever the opportunity arises. And so, after finding this new den the previous evening, I set out to introduce myself to this tiny family of canids.
As with most new dens, this is a process that can take hours or sometimes even days. Getting wild animals used to you and letting them know that you’re not a threat to their little ones can be a lengthy process to say the least. And so, this morning was different. As I made my way across the desert valley, I soon saw the signs of life I’d been hoping to see outside the den. Mom and dad were already on the alert as they observed this two-legged creature slowly approaching. I would often pause and look around, giving them time to see that I didn’t pose any threat. Never directly approaching the little foxes or their family den, I zig-zagged all around that huge landscape for nearly three hours! Finally, the foxes settled down and accepted me as just another harmless creature making its way through their dry desert home. And finally, I made my way a bit closer to the den and sat down, dust puffing up around me as I did so.
Mom and dad fox and I sat there together for some time before I noticed some movement just behind them. Another little head peaking out of the family den. Within moments, their precious little one emerged and began to explore its dusty surroundings. Mom and dad looked at me once more to ensure that I posed no threat. Satisfied, they laid their heads down and shut their eyes for a morning nap while their baby continued to explore all around. Yes, this morning was different, new friends made and new bonds of trust established.
